During the organization of ALL visits, the COMPASS Visits Coordinator is in direct contact with the COMPASS EXSO (formerly GLIMOS) (Experimental Safety Officer / Group Leader In Matters Of Safety) to get the proper authorization. (S)he is also in direct contact with the engineer in charge, to know which work is planned when and if there are any limitations due to ongoing work. The safety rules which are applied at COMPASS, are defined CERN wide. These presently valid general safety instructions can be found here, along the English PDF and French PDF files.
ALL guides must be fully aware of these rules and thus must have read the above mentioned files. During the visit, the rules must be strictly followed. The itinerary should be followed as specified, unless otherwise instructed by the COMPASS Visits Coordinator. In case an alternative itinerary is valid, the guides will receive a copy, typically by email.
ALL guides must:- be authorized to access the visiting area, building 888, since this is a Supervised Radiation Area,
- be aware of potential hazards,
- be aware of specific safety instructions,
- know the actions to be taken in emergency situations and apply them if required.
- a valid personal dosimeter (DIS) and an operational dosimeter (DMC) during a visit,
- have followed the safety visit to building 888,
- have taken knowledge of the presentation "COMPASS VISITS", made restrictedly available online by the CERN Visits Service and on this website.
- there is a maximum number of 12 (twelve) visitors per guide,
- the minimum age of the visitors is 16 years,
- pregnant women are not allowed to access building 888,
- visitors with mobility issues are not allowed to join the visit, since there are several staircases along the itinerary which can cause dangerous situations (during evacuation),
- visitors are not allowed to eat, drink or smoke inside building 888,
- visitors need to wear flat, closed shoes,
- visitors equipped with medical aids (pacemaker), are not allowed to join the visit due to the presence of strong magnetic fields (this is not the case during LS1).
